What is your daily fiber intake?
Posted on 2011-04-28 07:39:19
We have all heard that we need fiber in our diet, yet most Americans get only 1/3 of what is recommended daily, mostly because we we are choosing processed food that is often void of fiber. Foods naturally high in fiber are also high in vitamins and minerals necessary for body function. Fiber can also improve digestion, elimination and help manage weight. Fiber-rich foods keep us full longer so we eat less. The recommended daily intake of fiber is 25 grams for women and 35 grams for men.
How can you increase fiber intake? Here are some suggestions:
- Choose whole fruits and veggies over juices
- Select whole grain bread, pasta and cereals (label should say 100% whole grain)
- Choose brown rice over white
- Eat beans, lentils and legumes
